The Right Honorable Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965), the son of Lord Randolph Churchill and an American mother, was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. After a brief but eventful career in the army, he became a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900. He held many high posts in Liberal and Conservative governments during the first three decades of the century.
 

A "Study of Boats", completed in 1933, has grown to be one of Churchill’s most celebrated artworks, gracing the cover of numerous publications including, “Sir Winston Churchill, His Life and His Paintings”. This artwork remains one of Churchill’s most popular and widely viewed paintings. The original artwork, formerly belonging to Clementine Churchill, has been displayed at numerous events and exhibitions through the years, including the New York Worlds Fair in 1965.

Winston Churchill had been captivated by Chartwell from the moment he set eyes on the valley, and ultimately purchased the home overlooking the Weald of Kent in September, 1922. Chartwell was the subject of many projects over the ensuing years and provided countless scenes, still-lifes and interiors, for Winston’s brush. A "View of Chartwell" was completed in 1938 and first displayed in the Studio at Chartwell.
